Indie Shmindie

It’s been a month since the release of "Shirei Sadeh" (the album), and three months since the release of the first single, "Erev Sof Horef".

Three months in which I was exposed for the first time, as a "make-believe insider", to the Israeli indie scene. Yes, obviously, it's fun to be played on radio shows (huge thanks to everyone who broadcasted it!) and on the various playlists (thanks to everyone who included it!), and I had the pleasure of discovering some creators I didn't know and really liked, who released music at the exact same time as my album - mostly out of mutual support, partly feeling like they are competing for the same slice of attention.

Today it feels to me as if the album emerged, and immediately upon its release started a chemical reaction with the airwaves: fizzing a bit, blowing bubbles, and then gradually fading into a bottomless reservoir of songs. Some are classics, some gather digital dust, literally in the same reservoir with songs from the '80s onwards (honestly, in good company).

And me anyway, what do I have to do with this indie-shmindie scene?

Maybe because of my ripe age, my musical background, or maybe because I am truly old-fashioned in my musical taste, in my composing, and in my lyrics too - I feel as if I stepped out of the strait... sorry, the Yom Kippur War - writing songs of returning to routine, about love and longing (you won't find cynicism with me), using slightly archaic Hebrew, loving to sing with a rolling 'R' (to anyone who thought it was because of my Argentinean roots: no, it's just because of the songs I grew up on), and stubbornly refusing to sing about the war and the doom, even though they are clearly evident in the subtext. The recent cursed wars only strengthen this parallel.

Besides that, I may be connected to music through my veins and in every fiber of my being, but I don't make a living from it. Sometimes it feels like a blessing, and sometimes it's my undoing.

My undoing - because I could have done more: performed more, networked, been more well-known today, etc. On the other hand, I allow myself to make the music I love and want to make (if you haven't listened to the new one we released this week with "Genes", then like that for example), and more than that - I can disconnect and disappear whenever I feel like it. So I come, and go, and come back.

And yet, this album did move something. Today, a month later, and after long months of work, listening, improving, and tightening - I understand some things. I hear things today that will be brought up again for internal review in the next album. I am grateful for the process, the creation, the people who took part, and the listeners who lent an ear.

And that's it. But I'm still not leaving. After the summer vacation, when it cools down a bit, I plan to arrive in Israel to perform an evening or two, God willing.
